Everyone knows that winter impacts the range of electric vehicles. But what many people don’t know is that the simple task of “pre-conditioning” your vehicle can significantly reduce this effect to help maximize range. Pre-conditioning is a process in which you pre-heat the cabin while charging to “prime the battery” – so that your MINI doesn’t have to draw energy from a cold battery once you start driving. And it couldn’t be easier! The pre-conditioning function can be effortlessly activated or scheduled from the MINI App on your mobile device or your vehicle’s centre console – so you can stay nice and toasty inside as your MINI warms up outside. Once you set off, we recommend taking advantage of your MINI’s heated seats and steering wheel to stay warm instead of overusing the heating system, which can impact range.
HOW TO PRE-CONDITION YOUR MINIWhat actually causes “energy drain” is over-using the vehicle’s heating system while the battery is still cold. But don’t fret – this effect can be easily avoided with these simple tips & tricks:

Pre-heat your MINI while it’s charging.
This will ensure your MINI’s battery is all warmed up before you start your journey. For your convenience, you can use the MINI App to set your daily “departure time”, so your MINI will know exactly when to start warming up!

Take advantage of your MINI’s standard heating features.
Keep warm using your MINI’s standard heated seats and steering wheel (instead of pumping the heat at its max setting). Doing so will go a long way in conserving electric energy on the road. Unlike the heater, which requires a lot of energy from your MINI’s high-voltage battery, these features only draw minimal energy from your MINI’s low-voltage battery to help maximize range on the road.

Use your MINI’s ECO PRO Driving Mode.
The ECO PRO mode – also known as the ‘green’ driving mode in the All-Electric MINI – boosts efficiency to increase electric range. It also updates your real-time navigation to provide you with the most efficient and range-friendly route.

When not driving, keep your MINI charging.
Just like plugging in your phone at night, it’s always a good idea to plug your MINI in when you’re not driving it. In fact, you can program your MINI to charge during off-peak hours, when it’s less expensive. For best results, always be charging. That way, you will always have enough energy for wherever you’re going.

Keep your drive nice and smooth.
Driving smooth is the new normal. By avoiding excessive acceleration or abrupt braking, you can maximize your range even more.
Believe it or not, electric vehicles like the All-Electric MINI actually provide more reliable cold weather starts in comparison to combustion cars. This is because electric vehicle batteries only need to power a handful of electronics, whereas the batteries of combustion vehicles have to also crank a solidly frozen set of pistons in oil that tends to be as thick as molasses in extreme cold temperatures.
The All-Electric MINI delivers an electrifying drive, no matter what time of year it is. The unique placement of its battery (along the length of the vehicle floor) creates a lower centre of gravity, which helps enhance agility in every season. What’s more, the All-Electric MINI comes with our proprietary Dynamic Stability Control system. When turning, this system applies corrective brake pressure to individual wheels and adjusts engine torque to help you carve every cold shoulder with ease.
There are over 5,810 public charging station locations across Canada with over 11,100 charging ports. Charging stations can be easily found from the All-Electric MINI’s centre console, or from one of the many free charging apps available. Whether you’re looking for a Level 2 charger or a DC fast charger, drive assured knowing that your next charge is always within reach.

START OVER
The new all-electric MINI will warm your heart, your back, and your bum with its 3-stage heated seats. Sit down and warm up on cold mornings with the choice of seat, mid-back, or upper-back heating. Or to feel extra toasty, pick all three!
Leave your favourite pair of mittens at home and get your hands on the All-Electric MINI’s heated steering wheel instead. This hot water bottle for your hands now comes as standard on all MINI Electric models.
With remote pre-heating, you can receive the warmest of welcomes every time you set foot in your All-Electric MINI. Controlled via your vehicle’s centre console and the MINI App, you can pre-heat at regular time slots – so you can take your commute in complete comfort. Pre-heating while your MINI is charging also has the added benefit of maximizing its range, since less energy will be required to heat the cabin while you drive.
Stay in control even in cold conditions with Dynamic Stability Control. This advanced system uses sensors to measure steering angle, yaw, and lateral acceleration to determine the direction you want to go. If your MINI starts to stray, the DSC system kicks in by applying corrective brake pressure to individual wheels and adjusting engine torque to help you motor with peace of mind.
Lower centre of gravity, higher sense of exhilaration. The battery of the all-electric MINI lies along the length of the bottom of the vehicle, allowing for more nimbleness and agility year-round. It also gives you the security of feeling more planted on the road, so you can corner with confidence and enjoy that MINI go-kart thrill at every turn.
Optimize your All-Electric MINI for the winter season with the MINI App. Check your vehicle’s range so you can easily plan your journeys, find nearby charging stations, and pre-heat your MINI on those cold winter days. You’ll also receive service reminders and be able to book service appointments, such as your winter tire change, right in the app.
Did the forecast get it wrong again? The All-Electric MINI has your back. Headlamps will automatically illuminate if it starts to rain, so you can see clearly even in the dreariest of weather.
